Awesome content, thank you! I look forward to hearing your opinions on additional amps and where they fit into this extraordinary list. Thanks again
Sounds like a conclusion I came up with while chasing speakers. You can hunt for exceptional sound, but the hunt never ends and you never catch the imaginary game. Less hunting, more joy of listening.
The most frustrating thing to me, when looking for information about a certain product, are the folks who simply claim that "it sounded great to me", with zero substantiaton of exactly which qualities in the product made it so. Crickets. I usually don't open my mouth until I can offer advice where I heard something with my own ears, and can articulate exactly what it was that I heard, because it would be just an opinion otherwise, and that's useless to everyone else. You really do a great job with your channel, offering substantiated information with relative performance that is actually useful for purchasing decisions. I'm very grateful for it! Do you have a reference amplifier? That can sometimes also be a useful comparison.
This video blows the previous video out of the water :) I do find myself sometimes in amplifier purgatory, this does help put things in context.
I was convinced I needed new speakers to replace my Rega R3. I went to the Bristol Hi Fi show and came home knowing my speakers sounded excellent.
You do good work John, and Olaf is a good fit for your style, so I guess you have evolved that together. Whatever, I like what you do because it's informative, sets clear boundaries, and brings great music and beautiful images together for our delight. Always a pleasure, thank you.
Wow! This is brilliant! One of the best comparison videos you have produced. It really gives the consumer the information on what he or she gets when upgrading from a lesser amplifier to a better one. Sound quality wise should be said. I hope you'll continue to throw in a similar video once in a while to give us consumers the bigger picture when making a purchase decision. And since you've come to the conclusion that there are only marginally gains when going one step up in amps that tells me I can save a lot of money on settling for the Technics SU-R1000 over the Marantz Model10 and still getting an amp that blows the Wiim amp out of the water. Keep up the good work. PS! I wish you did a similar long term amps comparison between different priced speakers. DS
I have always believed in A/B comparisons and I have only purchased gear or speakers (or cables or power cords, etc.) when the A/B was available. In all the years I have been doing this, there have been several limitations that have made it difficult, but not impossible. Firstly, my local dealer is the only place I can do this, therefore, my comparisons are limited to his inventory. Secondly, I sometimes have to bring my gear down to his shop to have the comparison set up. And thirdly, I can't really duplicate my room with his. But I can tell you that the difference in speakers and amplifiers at some point was very clear - and improvements with amplifiers were the most telling.
It’s complicated… for several years now I’ve been telling myself I need to make a decision. I read, I gather information, I listen, I watch tons of review, I try things out, but in the end I never actually decide and I always stick with the old hi-fi system my father bought in 1970. Completely overhauled and in perfect working order—everything’s Philips. Speakers 22RH480, amplifier 22RH591, turntable GA202, radio 22RH691. The cassette deck and CD player are more modern, F6233 and CD582. I even added a DAC with USB, optical, coaxial, and Bluetooth inputs… In the end, I always tell myself I’d like to get something new and better, but by now I’m so used to the way this system sounds that I just can’t bring myself to change! To me, it’s the "sound of home", and for that reason, it's become my favorite.” :)
Love yer work Johnny
Great work sir. Some great points for people to consider.
I applaud your voice of reason here on you get what you pay for as well as dispelling the giant killer/unicorn myths, BUT one should not ignore the fact that you could spend more money on Amp A which doesn't agree with your sound signature sensibilities and be less satisfied than buying a cheaper amp which does fits your preferred sonic signature. Just an added complication in that you aren't necessarily always more satisfied by spending more money. It has to be on the right product of course. Thanks again for your wonderful content!
I love your review philosophy noting objective differences of side by side comparisons. String enough of those together and you have a nice continuum of information. At some point, subjective preferences come into play when making final decisions, but if you have enough objective information, you can feel better about trying something out with the hopes it will resonate with you subjectively.
“Local stereo store…” is a unicorn around here.
Thank you John, for the great explanation of your testing methodology and the results - very, very helpful. Looking forward to your future reviews.
Thanks for the video and your ranking the amps. You get what you pay for but with diminishing returns in my experience. Once an amp powers the speakers so that they sound good in my room spending more for more headroom and micro details etc. Has its trade offs including the additional cost. Be well and rock on!
Or of course if audio memory is so poor just buy the last one you liked? Just teasing, John. Excellent assessment.
Man you do a lot of work on these.. I can’t imagine 🙏🙏🙏
One thing that fascinates me, and which never seems to get mentioned, is how hifi in recent years has led to the revival of the sideboard. Well into the 70s they were a standard feature of every domestic dining room, and then sort of disappeared, so it's really nice to see them making a comeback.
