Merry is losing her ability to discern dreams from reality, a situation made more complicated for her by her ability to seemingly transcend the border between them. The further Renko pushes toward trying to understand the nature of Merry's abilities, the closer she gets to awakening something dangerous - not just to Merry, but maybe to herself. That's Merry's greatest fear, that she could be the flame that Renko flies just a little too close to. It makes you wonder if she might not eventually be pushed to do something drastic, to throw a part of herself away, just to keep Renko safe. Simply fantastic scene as usual. The smoothness of the animation, the impressive VFX, and most of all the way you convey personality with movement are just stellar. The cartoony way Renko's arm extends into the frame to poke Merry is just such a beautiful counterpoint to the dutch angles and shifty camerawork that does a great job of conveying their contrasting personalities in just a few seconds of footage.

That final shot of Yukari sitting alone in her gap dimension with Renko's hat was devastating. Chills and maximum sadness.
