A Florida Mayor tried to ban this documentary about Palestine… so naturally I had to see why.
Welcome to Movie Mondays. I challenged strangers to watch No Other Land with me, a controversial Oscar-winning documentary.
Banning something just because you disagree with it feels like a violation of freedom of expression. Boycotting is fine though. But vandalism is not the same as boycotting.
The story focuses on the land disputes in the Palestinian region of Masafer Yatta. The movie made me feel empathy for the Palestinian cause. But, I did feel the narrative was a bit one-sided. I would have liked to see the response from the other side.
I researched the topic to inform myself on the West Bank disputes. The conflict is extremely complex, there are lots of words I don’t understand and that I had to look up, which significantly increased the amount of time I spent researching the topic. For example, if you just google Masafer Yatta, this is what you get: What are hamlets? Where is Hebron? What is a kilometer? How much is that in freedom units?
I’m a history buff but this is too stressful and that’s when I realized something interesting. Perhaps the reason there is so much misinformation and division is because it is so difficult to keep up with every minute detail about a topic. We blame people for being uninformed, but the truth is, we’re drowning in information. The agents of chaos know this, and perhaps that’s why it is now easier to lie, after all, “a lie told once, is just a lie, but a lie told 1000 times becomes the truth”.
